Terrace maintenance – varnish or oil?

When planning the construction of a terrace, the talk starts about what material to choose – wood composite or natural wood – usually naturalness wins. However, it should be remembered that wood is capricious – it will require more frequent maintenance and, above all, additional coating. If you still chose wood, the second no less important issue is terrace care. Oil or varnish to choose for wood protection? We will talk about this in more detail.
Terrace maintenance. What is the difference between varnish and oil?
When using varnish, the wood is covered with a relatively strong film that protects the wood well from the effects of the environment. However, the varnish has one very big drawback – the dimensions of the wood change with seasonal changes and the varnish is missing and cracks, begins to peel. In order to renew the peeling areas of the terrace, you will have to sand off the entire layer of varnish and then re-coat the terrace with varnish.
Due to this inconvenience, more and more often oil has been used for terrace care. The oil does not form a solid layer because it is absorbed into the wood, so it is possible to renew only the areas of the terrace damaged during operation. The oil moisturizes the wood, binds its surface, as a result of which it is less prone to splintering, cracking and peeling.
The difference is like night and day from Soviet oil
Unfortunately, Lithuanians are still wary of wood oiling. This is influenced by a bad opinion about the oil in the past. With the old oils, wood had to be covered in many layers, the oil dried for a long time, and the surface covered with it quickly lost its protective properties, was greasy and difficult to renew, and the oil itself had an unpleasant and intense smell.
However, the quality of modern oil has changed significantly. At the moment, the market has been conquered by the Danish oil “WOCA” for all types of wood. It is a top quality, environmentally friendly oil, resistant to external factors such as water, rain or dirt. It also protects against UV rays, fading, the appearance of mold and fungus, and temperature fluctuations. Oiling “WOCA” products will not only protect wood from external factors, but also extend its service life.
Created a special technology
WOCA oil manufacturers have developed a special technology called Hyper Cross Linking. It allows the extraction of the strongest oil binding agent, which allows the oil to absorb into the wood and harden deep within it, making the oiled wood extremely strong. Hyper Cross Linking technology ensures better oil performance, as oiled wood shrinks less, hardens better and absorbs less water. This oil is water based. It contains little solvent, so it has a very mild odor and is completely transparent.
Lots of pros and no cons
Also, WOCA oil is unique in that it is air permeable, so the pores of the wood remain open, which preserves the natural appearance of the wood and highlights its texture. In addition, oiling moisturizes the wood, gives it the desired shade and shine.
Well, after all, WOCA oil is also popular because, in order to paint and protect the terrace, it is enough to oil it only once, which is very easy to do. This should be done in spring, in preparation for the summer season, and even better twice a year, before summer and before winter. Then you will protect the wood perfectly.
