Preparation of the terrace base

Preparation of the terrace base

A terrace is a structure of light construction, but it needs a base, or in other words, the foundation of the terrace. You can, of course, assemble the terrace by simply “throwing” the bricks on the grass, but it will be literally “floating” and “slightly” different every spring.

Geotextile – it is important that a geotextile is laid after the foundation is installed, otherwise grass will grow and creep through the gaps in the boards. Why can’t you lay a polyethylene film or some “agro type”? Because it is necessary that the water drains well and does not accumulate – geotextile perfectly passes water, is strong and long-lasting, unlike other films that will not pass water and will create an excellent medium for mold, fermentation, rotting, etc. under the terrace.

Types of terrace piles – supports

Screw foundations

Preparation of the terrace baseHelical foundations – clean and quick preparation of the terrace base. One of the main advantages of this type of foundation is that it does not require a lot of preparation and ingredients – such as sand, cement (or ready-made concrete bags), reinforcement, mixer and hard work. It is the same as a large wood screw, only its purpose is to keep loads screwed into the ground. You will be able to screw in the screws side by side, and more importantly, you will be able to immediately continue with the next stage – the installation of the frame. As with typical foundations, the recommended depth is 80-120cm deep, or below freezing.

Pedestals

Adjustable supports as a base for terraces are usually used on exposed roofs or a solid base, such as concrete, pavers. In places where there is a slight difference in height, they are easy to level the plane.
On the ground, such a system, when the soil is dug, a layer of crushed stone is poured, it is compacted, sidewalk bricks are used to achieve a stable base (they are relatively inexpensive) and pedestals are installed on them, it is used when there are many (or few, but it is not clear in which place) important communications and when drilling piles there is a chance of damaging them. Otherwise, such a system is not worthwhile, as it is more expensive than drilled concrete piles.

Drilled concrete piles

Still often the most common pole type in ours for best availability. A convenient, strong and long-lasting method for the base of the terrace. True, not as clean and fast as with screw-in poles. As with fences, in Lithuania it is recommended to drill poles 0.8 – 1.2 m. A metal galvanized screw is usually inserted into the pile as a fastening element, which serves to tighten the frame.

Metal pipes are forged

It is a technology from lime construction. Metal pipes, preferably galvanized metal, are hammered into the ground. Can be applied to structures with small loads, such as 10-20m2 terrace floors.
